Compiling grad school deadlines, application requirements, and so forth into a giant spreadsheet is probably useful. However, this does not mean it should be done when you need to be doing real work.

There's nothing wrong with spreadsheets! Just, you know, when your options are to work on the project due tomorrow or make spreadsheets to keep track of deadlines 6 months away, you should probably go with the project.
